Not really that good anyway. Burnt oil etc.
They don't do delivery!
No, but a favorite of us locals
This place was like finding a goldmine. We reached bar harbor a lil late in the evening and found everything closed, except this and a Mexican restaurant nearby. It was a lil cold and we wanted to eat something hot and spicy. We thought of checking out this place. And we are so glad, we did :-)We ordered chicken ginger n garlic fried rice, chicken dumplings, pan fried and Chicken fried rice . Everything turned out to be exceptional. The chicken was tender, and the rice was well fried in hot sauces. It all blended so well. My son loved the dumplings, they were so juicy and yummy( my mouth is watering as I type this!!!).The waitress was also very friendly to us.I think this is a hidden gem on the bar harbor street. We recommend this place and will definitely visit it again someday!!
General Tso’s chicken was sooooo amazing taste. Cantonese seafood fried noodle was great too. Taste wise, it was five stars. I am sure I will be back especially for general tso’s chicken. Their sauce was amazing.
Great food, great prices, slow service
Only ordered dumplings for my daughter, twice. She loved them both times.
Probably the best Chinese fast food I've ever had. Not the usual flavors and tones. The staff can be fun, too. Do try!
I typically visit Bar Harbor yearly and this was my second visit at this restaurant. I remembered how much I like the pork fried rice last year and decided to get the dish again. The pork rice was just as good as I remembered but the scallion pancakes and the vegetable rice were subpar. The vegetable rice had practically no vegetables and the scallion pancakes were super oily and lacking scallions. Portion size for all three dishes were good. Service was fast and the cashier was also very friendly.
Fantastic food
Lovely aesthetic and wonderful outdoor area for eating and enjoying the fresh air. Food is delicious too!
Service is great, food was enjoyable, portions were good. Overall a very pleasant experience.
Listen up, you ain’t getting anything cheap in Bar Harbor, including Chinese food, but after you get over the prices, the food is A-mazing! Look around, it’s the only chinese place within 20 miles. You pay over $50 for whale watching and $200 for a motel room around here, so count yourself lucky paying $13 for a pretty authentic Chinese dish. The American Chinese food has excellent flavor, and if you want real Chinese food, ask for the Chinese menu.
Always good food. Friendly staff. The seating there is comfortable and a lot of room.
Decent, inexpensive Chinese food. I liked the scallion pancakes, but found the sweet and sour tofu to be flavorless and greasy. I'd order differently next time. The service was slow, perhaps because they had a lot of take out orders like mine. Expect a wait, and don't arrive hungry!
Great general tsos, salt and pepper chicken and scallion pancakes. Our server Queenie was always great and attentive. 10/10 would recommend
Service was fast. Just regular chinese food.
I love this place! I have been eating here for years, and think they turn out great food at a great price
Delicious, reasonably priced. Fast, friendly service. Very casual, kid friendly.
Great Wonton Soup!! The Best w Chix.. Pork.. Shrimp!! Or any one of those! #1 for Non Lobster... And have that too!! Special Joy Style...😀😀😀
The food was not bad. But, they had wrong calculations on my bill. And they didn't want to return my money.
Very standard Chinese food. Don't expect anything authentic when coming here. The food is good and the service is actually really good to. I remember one time I came here with my friend and ordered so many appetizers it was crazy. They had this cart that they rolled all the food out on and it was such a great experience. The presentation of the inside is pretty basic and nothing special.
Very decent American style Chinese food. Quality of food seemed similar to what you may find in a NY Take-out resturaunt. Staff was friendly and the resturaunt seemed quiet and comfortable.
The food took forever to get...got it home and they forgot to put in our scallion pancake that we paid for. Fried rice smelled rancid. Literally couldn’t eat more than 2 bites of steak teriyaki because it was so full of tough veins. Frozen crab Rangoon’s that were burned. Chicken fingers that my 6 year old “liked” were gross!!! My friends husband loved his China Joy but only after a few Mai Tai’s while waiting for the food to be ready...😩
I'll give a solid endorsement. They've been there for as long as I can remember now. I see locals in there often enough. Not sure if they're year round but they've been open late into the season. Pretty much what you might expect from Americanized Chinese food. It's quick and sensibly priced. Food quality has impoved over time. Stick to items you might generally order and don't get anything too crazy. I'll give a nod to the homemade chicken dumplings. Boneless spare ribs too, which are cut as big chunks. The food can be salty at times but you can ask them to leave it out and add your own at the table. In town this is one of the quickest, easiest, and most affordable spots.
Food is nice but it could be more
Had delicious spring rolls and a generous portion of shrimp fried rice. Delicious. Will come again.
Great service awesome food and alcohol selection is plentiful. Find parking and go. The prices are the best on the island.
Food was good and setting nice and cozy. A bit on the pricier side but to be expected from its location.
Loved the friendly atmosphere. And the food was fantastic. Will definitely go back when we visit Maine.
I can say confidently that this is the best Chinese food in the area (Hancock County.) The food, including the classic Chinese American favorites, are cooked to perfection: not soggy or overdone. The wonton soup is made so that you can add your wontons separately- not sitting in a big pot getting mushy all day. The crab rangoon is crispy with plenty of crab. Fresh vegetable rolls are addictive; meats are delectable, and the house fried rice and lo mein are filled with fresh goodies. All for the same or less than your typical Chinese place. Lobster, too! Familiar, friendly service and cozy atmosphere complete this treasure.
Arrived at 6:45. Ordered at 6:55. Several other tables arrived after we did. Very large tables. We sat until 7:35 without even receiving our appetizer. The tables that arrived after us got their food at 7:25.We approached the servers and inquired about the status of our meal. We were informed that there was still a wait, because they were preparing the food for the large tables.I have never had to walk out of a restaurant before, but this time I did after paying for our drinks. Food may or may not be good, but the service is abysmal.
We were in Bar Harbor during the off season (late April, specifically) and had dinner at China Joy one night. It was one of the best meals we had on our week-long trip. The dumplings were the best we've ever had anywhere - ever. The hot and sour soup was delicious, as was the Szechuen Chicken, fried rice, and Lo Mein. Fresh food, wonderful service, friendly staff - I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Seriously good Chinese food!
Food was great. great service. great prices.
Great service and food had fun.
I came here with some friends while craving Chinese food. The service was slow. All the food was either bland or over seasoned and we paid $65 for four horrible dishes. I would strongly not recommend to anyone.
A genuine Chinese restaurant. Never once been served other than delicious food. Diners who are disappointed seem to be those who are best off with an all-fried buffet and pupu platter place.
Overpriced, slow service, and the food was ok. Servers disappeared for 10 minutes while the restaurant was full of customers. I think it was short handed during the memorial weekend. The owner should've expected larger amount of customers on that weekend.
Lots of choices for anyone, vegan, seafood, meat! The Wok fried Lobster is great! And great Wonton soup priced too low for the amount and quality!
Cold Fresh Shrimp Summer Rolls are superb and take out is always fresh and hot. Best value in Bar Harbor
On this day, Service was average for the 6 of us. The food took a long time to come out and too many little things were missing (cutlery, multiple requests for water Etc). The food was decent but not amazing.
Good food, fast service & The Seafood Rice Noodle Soup & Ginger Fried Rice was my fav. Was extremely surprised to find a Chinese restaurant in Bar Harbor, Maine
The food was greasy...more then it should of been..original owners that had China Hill.
Food was decent but I couldn't help noticing a waitress pick her nose several times
I had a wonderful time here. I have seen China Joy for the last couple years of visiting Bar Harbor and I always wanted to stop in. I am glad now that I did. I can say I walked away from this place happy and very satisfied. I loved the atmosphere, food, drinks, and the service. All very good. Definitely a worthwhile stop in my own personal opinion. I will.be returning again.
Your average Chinese restaurant which definitely hit the spot for my wife craving something different than your typical American restaurant or Irish pub in bar harbor. We ordered the lobster in ginger and scallion sauce with roast pork chow mein
Very nice. Food was amazing and great prices. Was in and out within an hour.
I really was expecting to like this place. After several meals consisting of sandwiches and burgers, I was hoping for some spicy food. But I was somewhat disappointed at China Joy. The walls were dirty, there were dead bugs and debris on the window sills, no A/C, and the food was not appetizing nor inexpensive. Only thing positive was our waitress was friendly and quick.I'm sorry to leave a critical review and hope the owners view it as constructive and improve the place.
Quick Service, and very reasonably priced. My lunch was a tad on the salty side however, I had Szechuan beef.
We were craving authentic Chinese food and gave China Joy a chance. We are always wary of Chinese restaurants outside of the large Chinese communities. We were pleasantly surprised that the two dishes we ordered were good and very tasty. We ordered from the Chinese menu the string beans with minced pork and shrimp omelette. The main negative I had was that the string beans didn't have the ends peeled which made it difficult to eat as we had to spit them out. I took a picture so that you can see this. Overall, China Joy is a pretty good restaurant for Chinese food especially if you're having a craving for Asian food.
Stopped by for lunch today and was not disappointed! I got the spicy curry calamari; my wife got the spicy chicken lo mein and we split an order of the spicy garlic broccoli with pork fried rice!!! Nothing bad to say about the food, came out hot and fast.... absolutely amazing!!!!!
Excellent. Hot and sour soup was different that what I usually see at Chinese restaurants. Szechuan and sesame chicken were fantastic.
Try if you are hungry for Chinese food in Bar Harbor but don't expect NYC or DC standards.
